So it’s not like each episode I’m doing a showy little number and tap out of there. On Newsroom, Rebecca’s a part of the story as I am in Murder. Law & Order is a different structure because I’m a guest star. What’s it like coming in for these special arcs on shows like Damages, Law & Order: SVU, and The Newsroom?

You’re something of a pinch-hitter when it comes to TV dramas. How have we not seen you on Thursday nights before now? You seem like the perfect actress for any of Shonda Rimes’ series. NEWS: 'HTGAWM' Star Jack Falahee Says Questions About His Sexuality Are 'Reductive' It tells us something better about ourselves as a country and that’s good. People are responding to it and it’s fantastic as opposed to boycotting because it’s not representing what certain people want to see but this is what people want to see. To me, it’s on the pulse of how we are, of how society really is. It feels like it’s on the pulse of where we are today - generationally, gay characters, characters of all different races, strong sensual relationships, and of course, you have the interracial relationship. I’m not really in those kinds of scenes but it’s exciting to be a part of a show that is speaking to so many people. What’s it like to be a part of that forward momentum? The show has become noted for pushing the boundaries of race and sexuality on TV. And the scene ends with a shocking discovery and everything changes from then on for the ladies. I don’t know what you’ll see but I know the work and process was pretty exciting. There’s definitely yelling and slamming tables. We improv’d a bit … Fortunately, the director and writers are very cool and that we could - within the boundaries of what we knew - try anything.

We do have a showdown at the end of tonight’s episode. I never made less money than right after the Oscar. What’s it like to go head-to-head with Viola Davis? After I won the Oscar for “Pollock,” some newspaper printed, “She should get a million-dollar bump.” My sisters would write me, “You’re gonna get this million-dollar bump!” I thought, I’ll open the shutters to my hotel, and Scorsese will be on the lawn, and the lawn will be made out of emeralds. People have such false perceptions of how stardom really works.

That is not how stardom is supposed to work. I remember thinking, Why are we doing French service on spaghetti with red tomato sauce? That’s me!” I was catering a “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” wedding at the Bronx Zoo. And I stopped the cab, I was like: “Stop, stop. They had wonderful ads on all the buses, posters of Gabriel Byrne, John Turturro.

I got “Miller’s Crossing” while I was in school, but I went back to catering because I didn’t have any money. Your breakout role was playing the mob moll Verna in “Miller’s Crossing” in 1990, but a year after that you were still doing catering gigs. It’s like that old song, “keep on using me, ’til you use me up.” I just feel grateful. You know how it is when you feel used in a good way. But as an actress, I have never had a sigh of consternation when I get something complicated. When I first got the role, Jeff Daniels said: “I’ll give you a little Aaron Sorkin tip: Come to set with your lines down for the rehearsal.” I said, “What?” Usually the actor learns them during the day. Because Sorkin is famous for writing long speeches, I wonder if it’s a mixed blessing for an actor: meaty parts, but so much dialogue to learn. You’re joining Aaron Sorkin’s “Newsroom” this season.
